Ever since the launch of the Battle of Pelennor Fields last year, Middle-earth fans have been enjoying the best, most narratively driven edition of the Strategy Battle Game to date. The good news is, that was just the start! This weekend sees the first supplement for the Middle-earth Strategy Battle Game – Gondor at War – up for pre-order, so let’s take a closer look at what the book is all about…
First and foremost, Gondor at War retells the latter stages of the War of the Ring through a series of detailed narrative scenarios. These focus on specific battles and smaller, yet crucial, actions as part of a larger-scale engagement – each is a key event that ultimately led to the defeat of Sauron’s forces and bought Frodo enough time to destroy the One Ring.
In total, Gondor at War includes a whopping 29 Narrative Scenarios to play through, listing the specific combatants on each side in order to provide exciting battles that really match the look and feel of the scenes in the movies and books. The events kick off with Faramir’s valiant defence of Osgiliath (set just before his brother’s timely intervention and subsequent departure to Rivendell):
Some of these scenarios are like fun mini-games, such as Gandalf seeking to prevent Denethor’s madness-induced attempt to burn himself and Faramir alive, or Legolas deftly traversing a Mûmak’s back and dorsal howdah to take out the crew and – if he can – the monstrous beast itself:
On the opposite end of the scale, there are epic engagements such as the devastating charge of the Rohirrim that helped turn the tide at the Battle of Pelennor Fields or the last stand of the Men of the West before the Black Gate:
What’s more, should you seek to play the scenarios as a linked Narrative Play campaign, there are even rules that reward the victor of each battle with additional perks in the following game:
While these Narrative Scenarios form the heart of Gondor at War, there is so much more nestled within its pages. Come back tomorrow when we’ll be introducing some of the new Heroes that feature in the events of Gondor at War, as well as revealing more about a brand-new concept for the Strategy Battle Game – Legendary Legions.
