Ever since the Great Rift tore through the galaxy, the world of Vigilus has been beset on all sides. Assailed first by an Ork Speedwaagh!, then a Genestealer Cult uprising from within, and even an Aeldari Craftworldwarhost, the situation on Vigilus has escalated exponentially. Now that the Haarken Worldclaimer has arrived with the aim of taking the embattled sentinel world for Abaddon, the stage is set to enter a new level of intensity…
Vigilus Defiant is your stepping-off point for this epic new conflict, the first in a two-part series that’ll chart the war for Vigilus from start to finish. This is a new kind of Warhammer 40,000 campaign book, harking back to classics like Codex: Armageddon with new rules and new lore to get stuck into.
Vigilus Defiant tells of a sweeping conflict and follows planetary warfare in the 41st Millennium in unprecedented richness and detail. You’ll see the War of Beasts, from its very beginnings through to its most ferocious combats, complete with tactical maps and an in-depth look at the forces involved:
This is war on a truly massive scale, and it offers you the chance to see just how the Imperium defends itself. This is perhaps the closest look at life in the 41st Millennium since the Cicatrix Maledictum opened, and is an incredible resource for loremasters looking to learn more about this conflict and its far-reaching consequences.
After reading through Vigilus Defiant, you’ll have the chance to fight its epic battles yourself – either following the narrative or picking and choosing your favourite bits and rewriting history. With Vigilus Defiant, you’ll be able to play through your own War of Beasts, a sprawling 3-phase narrative campaign designed to accommodate 4-16 players. 12 missions bring the conflict to life and offer new challenges that, while specific to the battles on Vigilus, could quite easily be modified to showcase your own narratives. You’ll be able to keep your gaming group or club busy for many weeks.
War Zones, meanwhile, let you represent the unique battlefields of Vigilus with random tables and optional special rules that let you roll up a new battlefield with ease:
Battlezones, on the other hand, are optional rules that can be used in any of your games and provide incredible twists. Need to shake up your regular battle with a buddy? See how you both deal with a Genestealer Infestation – or an ever-encroaching tide of lava:
From an epic campaign to keep your gaming group busy, to novel new ways to play any games, Vigilus Defiant has it all.
Specialist Detachments are a unique kind of Detachment found in Vigilus Defiant, designed to reward you for taking an army anchored in the narrative and offer you some really unusual avenues for your collection. If you’ve ever wanted to field the Victrix Guard of the Ultramarines, a full force of Legio Cybernetica battle-automata or a dedicated drop force of Tempestus Scions, these Detachments allow you to do that.
You’ll find Specialist Detachments for the Space MarinesAstra MilitarumGenestealer CultsOrks and Craftworlds, each letting you represent some notable forces from the lore. The Indomitus Crusaders Detachment, for example, allows you to represent a force of battle-hardened Primaris veterans from the Indomitus Crusade, led by a Grey Shield…
…while the Windrider Host is perfect for Aeldari players looking to use as many jetbikes as possible:
We’ve even taken the opportunity to bring back the much-loved Dread Mob, in the form of the Dread Waaagh!
Every Specialist Detachment is fun, thematic and designed to be usable in any kind of play – all you’ll need to use them is to spend a few Command Points. Don’t worry if your faction doesn’t have any Specialist Detachments in Vigilus Defiant – we dare say we’ll be seeing more of them in future…
With the conflict on Vigilus growing increasingly out of control, it was only a matter of time before a commander of suitable authority arrived to sort things out once and for all – and they don’t come more top-tier than Marneus Calgar! Not only that, but in the wake of his apotheosis into a Primaris Space Marine, he’s bigger and more powerful than ever before (and that’s saying something – check back tomorrow for a preview of his new rules).
Accompanying the reborn Chapter Master of the Ultramarines are his Victrix Honour Guard – two highly skilled and dedicated bodyguards, tasked with his defence at all times. In battle, they protect him with their storm shields – and if the need is dire, their bodies – for they know that while the Lord of Macragge lives, there is always hope for victory.
Yet even Marneus Calgar looks set to have his work cut out for him on Vigilus, for the Black Legion have arrived! The first to set foot on Vigilus’ tortured soil was none other than Haarken Worldclaimer, the fearsome Raptor lord who the Warmaster Abaddon sends forth to burn and destroy in his name. Indeed, the arrival of the Worldclaimer is as a portent of doom, for once he plunges his Helspear into a planet’s surface, it is cursed to face the full wrath of the Black Legion in the war to follow…
If this awesome campaign book is anything to go by, the future for Vigilus certainly looks to be a thrilling one (if incredibly bleak and doom-laden for the Imperium!). We’ll be running a series of articles looking even more closely at some of the key events and rules included in this glorious tome, so keep your eyes on the Vigilus page here on Warhammer Community for regular updates and free short stories set on the war-torn planet.
