7th Edition Release Date! Updated!!

7th edition is coming, and all today in many places, current rulebooks for 6th edition are being taken off the shelves and sent back to GW. Yes, thats right.... you heard correctly. A lot is going on today.

Please remember that this is a rumor. A pre-order date of May 24th would put the release at May 31st. Whether its a release on the 24th or release on the 31st, things are getting exciting around here.

Here is a clarification and update from the anonymous source below.
I think the pre order date for the new rule book is the 24th. So sale on the week after. Most shops should have a poster with a commissar on it in there shops. And the date 24th war is coming or something in those lines.

via an anonymous source on Faeit 212
i can confirm that 7th edition will be released on 24th of may. As off today all rulebooks are removed from the shop floors and known lossed.

    1. I'd wait a bit and buy the coming set of bloodangels vs orks, it usually dont take more than like 1-2 months right?
Core rulebook is to expensive to buy, but next version of dark vengeance will probably remain a deal. If you dont like the models then just sell them online and youll make a profit + get your rulebook.

    2. Some of the rumours had the new set without a full rulebook tho. A mini QuickStart ruleset included. Decisions, decisions.

    3. Lol every time a new edition is about to be released (WHFB or 40k) there is always the rumor of there wont be the full rule set in the quick starter package. And every time the rumor turns out to be false.
What i want to know is why GW wont just release a stand alone mini-dex...maybe its because no-one will buy the ridiculously big book which contains a bunch of crap nobody cares about

    2. Most likely its going to force lords of war and strong hold assault into the game so gamers can't claim them as optional rules.

    3. Which is for the best, because those expansions bring things to every army to deal with problematic death stars. I hope they make all Dataslates and Forgeworld prints "official" too so the whiny brats can stop claiming they aren't legit.

      Delete
    4. I also hope they add in the Ace pilot rules out of Death from the Skies. heh

      Delete
    5. @ McDoogle: they are official, just like Planetstrike and Cities of Death are official. Doesn't mean anyone has to use them if it's not their cup of tea, and it doesn't make them whiny brats for liking things different than you do. Having your own opinion is one thing. Calling people names and being disrespectful because their opinion is different from yours, well...that's something else entirely, isn't it?

    6. @Eric Cook: you mean like mysterious terrain and objectives, those official rules that every tournament uses? ;)

    9. September has always been the usual slot.
This quik a releas of 7th just indicates GW is loseing money since 6th. What is backed up by annual Report and stockvalue.

GW is trying to squees a quik buck out of people with a mandatory release. They have not even had the Time to rework/revalance the rules.
I dont expect more than a ESC & SHA inclusion and minor changes to buff flyers more.
I dont see a Starterbox following to quik cause it would make the last one to unprofitable compared to the cost. And what good are bloodangels when you make SH & GCs the norm?
      Lets wait 4 weeks.

I put my bets on big hobbit release featureing "the battle of the five armys" in dec.!

I think calling it bull shit at this point is wishful thinking, there have been flags about this for over 5 months from various sources... at least youll only have to wait 4ish weeks for confirmation, but even then - if this rumour is true, youll find the rulebook has been pulled from your local GW within the next week or two.

    5. Most of the 6th edition codices were written or at least being worked on at the same time, so GW was well aware of 7th edition long before this. It's not like the idea came out of thin air.

Chances are, allies will get a tweak, as will the ability (or lack thereof) for assualt armies to be viable.

  5. So is this their way of forcing [tricking] everyone into buying escalation and stronghold I wonder

    ReplyDelete

    1. More like, forcing everyone who wants to stay competitive to buy terrain and big models. This alone is going to be a major shakeup. We're not getting edition 6.5. More will be changing than just a few rules and a couple of integrated supplements... from what I've heard.

      Delete
    2. Thats totally up to event organizers, remember that GW has no event sponsorship so if we don't want big models they won't be played.

    3. Lol
They wont Balance the game. They never have nore will cause they need to sell models. And thats all this 7th ED will do. Buff stuff and allow the unfair units in normal game and nerf the models you allready own.

Yeah fun if you run titans. But why exactlly still own the tons of toysoldiers that dont matter in apoc? And does anyone really think new players will get into Titan-hammer and keep playing? GW is just digging their own grave! Killing of playerbase and gameingarea is just stupid for their biss.

      Delete
    4. @Starchild: They already have such systems: LotR and Hobbit. I wouldn't mind seeing those made into Sci-Fi, but changing something that deeply ingrained as turn sequence is quite unlikely.

  11. Yeah I'm with Caleb...while I still think it will be more of a combination book than an actual rehaul of the rules after only 2 years (normally they go 4-5 between editions), if they do intend to change the rules I'm hoping that the main attention is put on the allies matrix, the assault phase, and FOC fixing (aka, not adding allies...inquisition...lords of war...dataslates...all at once).

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. That's the whole thing though. Why offer an incremental upgrade when you can overhaul some things to last four to five years? From what my GW tournament rep said we will all be reeling a bit after the new rules hit us.

      Delete
    2. People better be reeling (and in a good way) because otherwise people might spend their money on something else instead. For GW they may have the same end result whether they release a new BRB that has so few changes that people will feel that it didn't warrant a new BRB, or if they change a ton of stuff but players feel like the pendulum swung too far in the opposite direction and still find themselves unhappy with it.

$75 (or however much it ends up being) can go pretty far with other game systems, and many of my friends have been wondering if that money wouldn't be better spent on other games instead. For example, $75 invested in WarmaHordes would get me close enough to a starter set + rulebook that I kind of feel like it's up to GW and their execution to convince me to buy another BRB, rather than it being a given that I buy one.

      Delete
  12. So 2 years after 6th release we get another ruleset. Hope changes are for the better and not for the worse. Until then, I´ll be an optimist and hope 7th fixes 6th issues, and works on its strengths for further benefit of the game.

    ReplyDelete

    1. if worse then it makes more money ammending things. also make it easier to identify what is wrong and thus fix it.

  14. Newbie question here, What happens to the Codices? When are they replaced? Glad I bought Dark Vengeance two months ago to learn to play instead of the BRB. I'd be bummed if I had to buy another so soon. I thought GW went several years between BRBs?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. It's usually 4-5 years between revisions so while this rumour is very persistent I'm raising my eyebrows all the way into the sky.

      Delete
    2. The codices may be updated with FAQ/errata on GW's website. Or they may not! I imagine if there were any major rule changes, they would indeed add erratas.

      Delete
    3. Mauler - I am also on the same wave length as you. I'm imagining reprints (like with 3rd and 4th editions) that add the errata changes - effective to all codexes and the main rulebook - and adding the supplements into the main book. This would mean that no book is obsolete (just out of date).

      Delete

    1. Don't hold your breath. GW will probably want to revisit Dark Eldar, Blood Angels, Orks, and Necrons before Dark Angels have a go again. But then 7th edition Space Marines will come out and make the 7th edition Dark Angels look bad again. That's just the price DA have to pay for being the best looking I suppose.

Who wants to drop £60 on a book and then have to get another one a week later? I think it's a decent move...

      Delete
    3. sorry, lack of clarification: "which they aren't" refers to the fact that they are no longer available on the GW website, not that they are still there. Equally confusing could have been if I said "if rulebooks are no longer available to purchase on the GW site (which they are)". My fault for writing poorly. Either way, I only wonder if the rulebook is coming sooner than the end of next month

      Delete
    4. I got that :] What I meant was a codex is half the price and not everyone needs the particular codex that's about to be replaced, while the rulebook is twice the investment and everyone needs it which may be why GW pull them from sale earlier as to minimise the "I bought this last week and now it's obselete" type stuff.

      Delete
    3. So keep playing 6th in your group if the book is too much. Nothing says you have to play the latest edition.

      Delete
    4. And the BRB is the financial bridge too far? Really? If a new main rule book after two years is the final expensive straw, then you need a hobby better suited for your budget.

      365x2 [divided by 80] = 0.109
also my math might be out somewhat, however it highlights the obvious....that gaming is less expensive over a term of time than something percieved to be non expensive, and that my math is terrible.

  23. I guess it'll be a busy couple of weeks for rumors. I'd be surprised if much got leaked out of this. I'd be even more surprised if those past rumors ended up being true.

I can't say I'll be sad to see 6th edition go. A little bit of rebalancing to vehicles (heck, just remove First Blood as a rule and you'll have rhino rush again) and to the assault phase and we'll see a lot of units viable again, other than just gunline.

  24. Changes that I expect:

    1) Allies matrix is going to get overhauled and Battle Brothers is going to disappear or become so that you cannot transfer rules/abilities/powers between units from different codexes.

    2) Psychic powers are going to get rebalanced. I think Divination is going to get the biggest change. More warp charges for most of the powers and the primaris will be changed from Prescience.

    3) USR changes like skyfire and interceptor. I think they're going to take away the restriction on skyfire shooting snap shots at ground based units and make it so that you get a bonus to hit flyers but not at your normal BS instead. I also think ignores cover is going to get nerfed along with changes to barrage, heavy vehicles and monstrous creatures.

Plus of course lords of war and fortifications will be in there - much to my delight :)

    1. I'm one of the crazy people who would enjoy everyone being Battle Bros with each other, but I know that won't happen due to MORE broken combos instead of less. Fine, fix it.

Psychic powers. PLEASE update them. I don't care if Divination gets changed, because it's a good discipline. Pyromancy and Telekinesis though? Please make them worth taking!

USR changes... we'll see. Consolidate into a new combat is my hope.

    2. Allies have needed to get reigned in hard in my opinion. Their idea of allies was to make more cinematic, story-driven games, but all it did was cater to people looking to take advantage of a system. Give people an inch and they take a mile.
Whenever I had described 40k to people I compared it to chess without a grid. It is becoming less and less tactical just tacking on the most powerful units or models.
I really hope the new edition can bring back my faith in the game and the designers.

      Delete
    3. Chess without a grid, that's a good one. I hope you don't mind if I use that one.

      Delete
    4. They really need to sort the allies chart. Im a big fluff player and some of the armies that can allie just doesn't make sence. I though it was to make more fluff style lists but all it did was give WAAC player a hard on.

      Delete
    5. Is traitor guard too much to ask? Or fallen dark angels?

      Delete
    6. To be honest, tho, the Kool-Aide version of the truth is that allies were intended to make games more cinematic, but the accountants' version of the truth is that allies let people (like me) try out a small sized army as an allied detachment to see if we liked it, and hopefully once you've tasted that fruit, you (like me) end up with a full sized army of something that you really weren't considering venturing off into...

I'd say the strategy worked. They're not going to nerf that golden goose too much, but she does need to be tweaked...

But if all my codexes become disjointed and useless I will probably keep playing and just go all "cheap digital"

  35. Some interesting comments.
Here is my take on it after analyzing the various forums info + experience as an employee + contacts still in corporate =

It is likely not called 7th Edition (though not impossible). It is likely going to be 6th ed revised or 6.5, that's just my opinion.

GW likely didn't set out to combine scalation/Stronghold/Dataslate rules into a new book so soon after 6th edition. However, due to the backlash, low sales of those books, the swarm of rules clarifications (being handle primarily by 1, that's (1) person led to this new book. Makes sense.

From the HSC briefs received 6th Edition was supposed to be the edition to last a LONG time beyond the current 5-6 years, similarly that is supposed to be the case with the hardback Army/Codex books. So if/when this new book hits, my understanding is that we will likely have it for 7+ years.

Do. Not. Count. On. Blood Angels vs. Orks. 'nough said.

    1. Interesting, thanks!

    2. Interesting. Makes more sense to me. A consolidated book that clarifies a few rules and makes the Allies Matrix make sense, along with rules for all the crazy formations and detachments and supplements we've got now...

Yeah. 6.5 is much needed. Clearly the planning for 6th came well before all these new things we've gotten since then... So, consolidation is needed.

    3. However, if I am wrong, I will not accept blame...I will deny it, then shift blame due to solar flares disrupting alpha brain wave patterns in my head via the metal plate stuck there.

    4. My metal plates are in my leg yet the "solar flares" still seem to affect my brain chemistry, apparently making me very "crabby"! Ho Hum.

  36. The 6th ed collector's edition was a unexpected treat. One that, ironically, was a huge discount. Many folks received two products for the price of one (myself included). I can't help thinking someone lost a job over that one.

  37. Ugh,
I really expected to get more mileage from the 6th BRB that I invested in (purchased).
If these rumors do pan out, I won't be making THAT mistake again. IF I purchase 7th ed rules, it will be the small rulebook or nothing at all.

  38. Note to future self. don't get even number edition core rule books anymore. 4th was about as long lived as sixth.

    1. That was 4.5, wasn't it? I coulda sworn it was4th, but I could be wrong. me and my friend kinda swap turns on getting the full rule book and the mini and it all Getty muddled over time on how long per ed.

    2. **Nerd Alert**

It was 4yrs between 4th and 5th (2004 - 2008), all editions have been at least 4yrs between them so far. 6th came out June 2012, so if this is a full release, it will be the shortest so far.

Interestingly, first (Rogue Trader) to 2nd and 3rd to 4th were the two longest waits at 6yrs each, and 2nd to 3rd was 5yrs.

  39. I don't think they would releasing a new ruleset unless they realized there are major issues.

I know that may be too optimistic but that's what I really think.

  40. Except that some of the digi-dexes are more costly than their hardcover counterparts, even if by only about 50 cents.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. This is because iTunes operates on a fixed pricing basis (i.e. you can chose the price of your product from a list of prices) and so instead of 49.50 they have to sell them for 50 (49.99).

This also operates the same way in the UK except we get them at one penny cheaper (29.99 as opposed to 30).

      Delete
    2. And the digi-dexes that are more expensive are the "Enhanced" versions that heavy the list builder applet built into them. Ever since Eldar, the iPad Interactive digi-dexes are about $5.00 cheaper than the hardcover books... (I have the receipts to prove this...)

    3. ^that have the list builder...^

  41. Understand people: this is why we weren't seeing any updates to the FAQ's. This next version of the rule book will be an FAQ to 6th.

    3. It should. Errata and FAQ's aren't a product. They are REPAIRS to a flawed product already payed for.

    4. That's why they ARE free. New books are not.

  42. I assume the books get pulped but what about the sprues? Can they be recycled or do they go to landfill?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. If the reboxes are the same sprues as the old ones I would assume they would just repackage them into the new style boxes (obviously it depends on the volume of units that have to be repackaged of course)

      Delete
    2. Some things, however, are "shredded" and the plastic melted down and recycled. This is why you don't see any Assault on Black Reach boxes around any more, anywhere. Any that weren't sold to an indie FLGS were returned to (or just kept at) the regional warehouse and put thru the giant shredder...

  43. One thing to consider: The Deathstrike in the new AM codex uses the 10"apoc blast template which previous was only in Escalation/Apocalypse.

I think he's hinting that more of the Apoc rules will be tied into the core ruleset?

  44. Well I was against this rumor, but I guess I might be wrong. The rulebook on their website is listed as "Availability: No Longer Available". They are still selling the digital versions though... and the Escalation and Stronghold Assault. That makes me think this is a 6.5 only.

    1. Checked digital editions US on website, they are no longer available for 40k main rulebook

      Delete
    2. One of the rumors was that although Escalation and Stronghold would have their rules in the new BRB, that book would not include the unit profiles. Therefore you would need the escalation and/or stronghold books in addition to the new BRB. IF that rumor pans out it would explain why those books are still available for sale.

  45. Any one else hoping that the special rules get an update? I would like my templars to have a chance to be competitive. ...

  46. well, this might be the final nail in the coffin for me playing 40k. I can't say I love the changes that have gone on over the past year or so with 40k and them releasing a new edition in 2 years but not changing the story at all bugs the hell out of me. Warmachine seems better and better.

    1. I say that but I just can't get into the models. The theme just does not press my buttons.

      Delete
    2. I ventured pretty deeply into Warmachine and Hordes a while back, but found that I much preferred 40K models, rules and fluff. I have nothing against WarmaHordes, and if you're a very competitive person it's honestly a better rule set for tournament play. Just not my cup of tea. If this is really the "last straw" for you with 40K, then borrow the basic rule books for both Warmachine and Hordes, read the basic fluff, and figure out what faction you like the flavor of, then get someone at your FLGS to run you thru a few 35 point games with that faction (I'm sure they'd love to "convert" another 40K player, so you shouldn't have too much trouble finding someone(s) to help you out in this way). ~Then~, once you've had a taste of it! decide what you want to do. But, from experience, I would suggest crating up your 40K minis and stashing them in storage, rather than selling them, especially if they're painted, 'cuz you just never know when the 40K siren will call to you again, and you don't want to start from scratch building a new version of your old army/armies at whatever the prices will be at that point...

Just some advice from someone who's been there and done that. Wish I'd read all the WM and H fluff before I'd invested in so much of my first faction... And I've seen to many "former" 40K players come back to the fold having to rebuild their armies with all new kits, and regretting that they'd sold their old minis....

Still, totally up to you, just some free advice, so take it for what you paid for it... LOL!

  48. Very surprises like some others here that we get a new edition less than 2 years after the previous one, while GW used to wait 4-5 years between editions. This makes me expect a 6.5 rather than 7th edition.

    ReplyDelete
  49. if true then my expectation of what would happen actually panned out and became reality. if it's another revised 6th BRB then i guess 99.9% of players will enjoy it....for another 1.5 years [basing on 4 years a edition model] then they will complain of having the book for less than 2 years, many tears will be shed, and then 7th will drop....
