GW Changes: Stores Closing and Armies No longer Supported

This is one of those nights, where reporting the news and rumors just sucks the wind out of you. There are big changes happening. Finecast gone, GW stores in Germany gone, Wood Elves/ Bretonnians/ Beastmen/ Khemri also gone. It looks like a lot is going to change with after this last financial report.

While these are just rumors, they are given a lot of credibility by verified news earlier this evening that GW HQ in France, Germany and the US are being cut back. Here is the link to the news earlier.
http://natfka.blogspot.com/2014/01/games-workshop-germany-shut-down.html

Please remember that these are rumors.

* Forge World products will be available over the redesigned Games Workshop
webpage
* no more Fincecast products

produced, updated or supported
* roughly 30% of the sortiment will be come webshop exclusives
* all Games Workshop stores in Germany will be closed

As we have just learned that, Games Workshop Germany will shut down and the leadership of the German shops to England.

From this measure are also Games Workshop France and the USA affected. According to our source, the employment contracts of the employees were dissolved in the HQs as a result, with some probably the choice was woks to move or discontinue to UK.

The chain of stores is placed under the direct leadership of Games Workshop UK in Nottingham. Here are sure to report in the next week, the new boss in the stores, as they are currently without contact.

This change was apparently already on 16 January 2014 at the same time implemented with the announcement of the results of the semi-annual report.

  1. Whelp, this looks like the beginning of the end, to me. Desperate moves to cut costs and remain profitable.

    1. Got following info from other board:
"These rumours have been on a german site for some time now. I cannot prove, but I can definatly say you, that at least one part of this is bogus and based on misinterpretation. The stores in germany will not be closed. Games Workshop Germany will just seize to exist as a standalone company, along with Games Workshop France, Games Workshop Italy and Games Workshop Spain. They will be unted under the 'new' banner of GW Continental Europe. To my knowledge, GW USA and GW Australia will be integrated into GW UK. I am guessing that stores need to cut down on their inventory, and therefor Beastmen, Wood Elves and Tomb Kings might be moved to 'online order only' or something similar. That Finecast was only a stand-in we've known for quiet some time."

    2. That makes more sense. It seems that the complete shutdown and the cancellation of products would lose more money than it would save. Especially amongst Khemri/Wood Elf players. Or players in Germany/France.

    3. Yeah I hope so. Remember dark eldar were an online only and not updated for a loooong time. Hopefully that is just the treatment that tees armies will be getting. Also it doesn't mean that they won't bring these armies back down the road

    4. I can confirm that German stores will NOT be closed. Just German HQ will shut down thus forming "Games Workshop Europe" based in UK.

    5. Once again friend of mine dig this out from some German board:
"Waldelfen, Bretonen, Hexenjäger, Tiermenschen, Khemri, Soritas wird es nicht mehr geben! - Wood Elves, Bretonia, Witch hunters, Beastmen, Tomb Kings and Sisters of Battle will be discontinued completly"

It says that Whitch Hunters and SoB is gone too.

Personally I think it's all rumour blow out of propotion. I dont belive GW will kill so many armies.

    6. I know that the GW in Norway (yeah we have a total of one) used to be under a "GW Northern Europe" leadership, but is now part of GW England.
So it strikes me as more likely.

  2. That makes me ... sad. You call that management. Downsizing is the way down my friend. To your ruin. Very sad to see this come true. I'm afraid I`ll be forced to look for another gaming genre (I have Brets, Woodies and Neheks on my shelfs at home:'().

    1. Well it could be they are going to combine them in with other factions as well. Brets couls end up in an Empire Codex, Beastmen in the Chaos Codex, etc.. We will just have to wait for them to break our hearts if they officially announce they are killing factions off.

I was planing on starting WE like 4 years ago and just keep waiting for new AB. (Currently I am Raven Guard and Eldar player - WE would be my entering army for WFB).

    3. A lot of people are like this with armies. I have been interested in Wood Elves for years, and a good friend of mine plays Bretonnians.

    4. Ironically, I'm this way with Tyranids. I've had a great, to me, concept for them in mind for ages, and have been working through my other projects backlog while I waited to see what the new bok would bring. I can only imagine how much more disappointed I would be right now if instead of a new, seemingly poor, book they'd been squatted.

Very sad to hear of the limitation of the fantasy ranges.

      Delete
    5. I've always waited on new books to start armies - then you're in on the ground floor so to speak, and more importantly not buying an army that might dramatically change shortly after you finish building it.

...sadly, I built Wood Elf, Beastmen, and Tomb Kings armies that way... *sighs*

Nope. They will continue to *dominate* the industry, but they haven't led it for a while now.

I don't want GW to shut down, but a major revision of their management and development processes would be a great boon to the whole industry. Hell, if they do it right they might regain the "leader" moniker.

    14. Problem is that most people don't treat Natfka's site as a rumor site even though he's very adamant about presenting it as such. Look at other comments here in the section and people are reacting like this is news.

Quite frankly I find these rumors it a little much to believe. Dropping all support for four armies is a VERY radical move and not one I believe GW is going to take. There may be some truth in there but I don't believe that everything this person is stating will happen. Anonymous rumors are usually not the best sources.

      Delete
    15. also in regards to the accuracy on dakka, a lot of that is so out of date, because many of the rumors from a year ago or so ago, have come around. And many are still coming. Others were playtesting, and said to be playtesting, but marked incorrect as well when in fact I know for a fact they were playtest material.

So as far as accuracy, the dakka listings are very inaccurate, but I have been through this with petre before.

However, I dont really care. I report rumors that come this way regardless, and I try and help readers during my weekly round up on which ones are from good sources. I rate my rumors based on other information beyond the rumor, such as other sources saying the same thing, where the information came from, and sometimes just plain logic.

As far as this one goes, the validity of it is in question. I would give it three stars right now on my rankings from what I have heard, which is just an average rumor. Could very easily fall to two before the end of the day as I look into it more.

      Delete
    16. That's a troll I think but regardless it's funny he called them your rumors. As if you've made up all of this and it comes true 90% of the time lol. That is certainly a lot of credit there bud. Don't fret.. Nothing is in stone!

  10. I wouldn't be so catastrophic... they are not closing shops, they are just changing the management. And for what concerns whfb armies that are supposed to be removed, atm they are alive and kicking on gw website, maybe bretonnians will be absorbed in next empire supplement, that doesn't mean they are going away.

I heard that the weekly release is changing to a monthly release, every third week of the month and 40k/Fantasy (plastic GW) thanking the other weeks. Is this true? A few of us are worried this will slow down the rate of releases and those of us that are waiting for Armies/units/characters will have to wait longer.

Please tell me this is not true and just someone starting rumours.

      And their reply.....

      Hi Mike,

Thank you for your email. We currently aim to release products each week, this may always be reviewed but we have no plans to change this in the near future.

  14. I don't know how many times designers have promised that they are never going to "squat" an army again. I've heard it said several times, and, as I ask about Woodies any time I make it to a Games Day, at least once to my face. Maybe this was a decision handed out from the accounts guys and the studio had no control, but it doesn't really seem likely to me. With ramped up digital production providing a whole new income stream for the company and, from what I read, good earnings last year, and the fact that they're only closing some stores in Germany, I'm feeling a little exaggeration and doomsaying with the source of these rumors.

    1. Somehow I missed the previous news items about the stock losses. Which explains why they're closing retail locations. Must learn to read.

Most likely merge with the Wood Elves themselves.

Although to continue your trail of thought...
      Beastmen in to Chaos
      Brets into Empire
Wood Elves in to High elves

      Delete
  18. You should put more thought into posting rumours.
Closing all stores in a country makes absolutely no sense, especially considering its one of the wealthier countries in the EU, GW market next door. Added to this GW's last financial statement said they would continue to open new stores and move existing ones.
And why Germany? GW AU/NZ is a far smaller market and barely scratches out a profit from 37 stores! (in fact it wasnt making money a few years back)
The next thing that makes no sense is stopping production/support for the 4 WHFB armies. When you have so much money tied up in resources for them already and little cost to produce. The 4 armies are practically webstore only anyway.
Add to that moving 30% of the range to webstore only?
There is already more than 30% of the range that is direct only, so this just make it sound like more nonsense.

    ReplyDelete
  19. So...
    "Kingdoms of Men" armybook
    "Light Elves" armybook
    "Hordes of Chaos" armybook
    "Undead" armybook

It's not like they're going to throw the plastic moulds anywhere, those things last practically forever (what with model kit manufacturers rereleasing kits made back in the 50's). My guess is that it simply means folding the army into the closest AB, no more new models, and say buh-bye to Finecast and once more to the metals like it's 2011.

Also, squatting the four armies would tie in nicely with the rumours that 9th Ed is going to significantly advance the timeline.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Of course, they could even go as far and not even rename armybooks, just include the surviving plastic units in Empire/HE/WoC/VC book and explain in the fluff how these few are the pitiful remnants of the once mighty army etc.

    2. There's something missing from the "Kingdoms of Men" book there. Take with Salt Mound, but it's rumored that at least Kislev will be making a comeback in that book.

  26. I am shocked and appalled at the thought of all those 4 armies being dropped!

Granted they have never been too mainstream but they have some unique models and play styles.

You'd think GW would get the hint and improve their support of independents stockists a bit more after penalizing them so much.

    ReplyDelete
  27. This rumor stinks of crap and its dangerous, too - Forget the fact they've had blip on their stock prices (which will bounce back up again, if you look at GWs share price history) when people irresponsibly start to create rumors like this, you can do two things

    a) Put potential customers off buying those products (therefore damaging sales)
    b) Put potential investors off buy stocks (really, really bad)

^ We don't want either of those outcomes to happen to GW. GW is a lynch pin company in terms of wargaming. Its intro level - I don't know a wargaming fan that didn't start with GW. If they bust - there is no one to replace them and no one is anywhere near big enough to. You won't see a sudden invasion of Mantic stores or waves of Dropzone appearing in TRU - the industry will become entirely online based, without any real backbone to get the public or (most importantly) KIDS interested.

I'm calling bullshit on the whole lot. At worst they're restructuring and cutting overheads, moving all the sales management centrally to the UK.

Though I'd like to throw in the token I would love for larger, more consolidated Warhammer rule books (Warhammer: Kingdoms of Men, Warhammer: Hoards of Chaos, Warhammer: Undead, Warhammer: The Elves), but that'd probably price the books well out of most peoples reach.

  30. With the redesign of the WD (not available in german anymore), the latest expansions available in entlish only and reduced workers in the stores, this comes as no surprise to me.
The change to LotR is only logical. The whole line hangs like a giant stone on GWs neck since the Hobbit fiasco. Moving the kits to FW, who casts more on demand, provides enough production capacity to ensure the kits CAN be made and frees up capacity in more profitable areas. (No, not tyranids, but Imperial Guard).

More Webshop exclusive items are also nothing new, they try to keep as much product in their own house instead of letting other retailers participate.

    1. You are right about profits coming first in publicly traded company. We know they don't understand the market so we might be seeing the first major company reaction on the production side.

We saw BT getting swept into basic marines so they did not need to produce models or a codex for that army.

Sisters still are rocking the extremely high costed models vs getting cheaper plastic versions.

  33. Not to say we told you so, but, we told you so. For quite some time we have been saying you can't keep raising prices and changing trade agreements (sticking it to the FLGS, bits market, charging for things that used to be free, etc) like this and expect loyalty to remain. There are so many other option out there now, you can't operate like a monopoly because you aren't one. Circuit City and JcPenny would like a word with you.

  34. As a few people here have said, they are NOT closing all the GW stores in Germany. They are only closing the HQ, and the employees that work there have been offered positions in the UK, or to quit. I Talked with a local GW Germany employee about this already, and he say if the GW Shop / Gaming area below the HQ would be closed, he did say that the ONLY the HQ was going to be closed.

The normal GW shop will still be around. You should really update the artical, because it's feeding the wrong information.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Hmmmm, I have to side with others and say that this rumor may be real information blown out of proportion. It is rare when a company will close down physical locations that remain profitable, though moving locations for lease/staffing reasons may happen. They also don't tend to quit on product lines unless something else takes its place, and even after that they support those products for years after. Now I could see them closing down the HQ and consolidating markets into something like GW Europe. They'd call that "streamlining management processes" in the corporate world. I could also see them handing LotR and Hobbit to FW, as they can produce on demand. Finally, I could also see them wrapping armies into books (Beastment to Chaos, Wood Elves to Elves, etc). That way, they can continue to produce existing models without having to dedicate whole resource departments to them. So ya, there is some believable cores of truth here, but I'm not sure about the rumor as it stands.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Looks like much needed streamlining.

A good product with an adequate pricing shouldn't have failed this way, but of course, every time someone was complaining (like myself), the group of hardcore fanboys said "boooo, whiner, boooo, everything they do is nice!!!".

Someone even said: "actually it's cheap!!"

Here you got it. And I am NOT happy, just feeling I was right.

    1. But of course, STILL they don't learn a thing: still next news from Natfka are that they give you a dataslate for 7,99$.... come on GW, tired of this shit that should be free in a WD!!!!!!!!!!!!

Maybe I missed the 'free White Dwarf' section last time I was in a GW store, because here I've been *paying* for them all these years...

  41. Welp, as I play Tyranids and Sisters I'm not really invested in the game right now anyway. Certainly not after the Tyranid Codex desaster.
Also I haven't played WHFB for years. Not many people play it anymore, where I live. :/

So might as well let it end here.

  42. Guys. Guys. Listen.

What if the rumour is indeed misinterpreted, and these armies are not Squatted, but instead become direct-only? And what if the move to direct-only could allow GW to offer more "alternative" or esoteric armies in addition to those sold in brick-and-mortar stores and third-party retailers, so that in the end there would be actually MORE armies available than at the present?

    1. Take Chaos Dwarfs (from Forgeworld) as the example - which was the resurrection of a "squatted" army.

I like this line of thinking.

  43. 'rumours' like this seem more designed to create traffic to rumour sites and less likely to be anything that a business would actually do.

Why would any company voluntarily give up its market share? Tomb Kings, Wood Elves, Brettonians and Beastmen are all (potentially) really popular armies let down by 2 oldish books and one underpowered one. They release some cool new Wood Elf rules and models and then we'll see if they're popular...

  44. I suppose these armies were removed because they did not generate enough sales - probably because the ABs are sub par and they armies do not compete well.

The thing is that this kind of reaction to failing sales, i.e. removing an army entirely, may lead to people not picking up new armies, especially "under dogs", fearing that they may get the "knife" as well.

This could become a self enhancing situation.

  45. Games Workshop, whatever trouble you're going through, please keep physical stores alive.

That is where you meet your gaming buddies and that alone is priceless.

I've lived in a town without a GW store before and finding people to play with was impossible. I quit 40k for 10 years as a consequence.

  46. I doubt retail stores are closing (unless it's an unprofitable location). What it sounds like instead (as was mentioned in their financials) is they're consolidating the management of their sales channel. So instead of having regional sales HQs, all the management is done from Nottingham.

It cuts costs, and streamlines the business, but keeps the actual stores open - as there's less country-specific overheads.

    Time will tell, of course.

As for the armies… I'm not convinced (yet), but I could see it happen. Wood Elves were always a niche army, maybe 1 player in 50, from personal experience. Brets... as a former Bretonian player I'd be sad to see them go, but again, they always seemed a very niche army. I was the only Bretonian player I knew at the time. No one else could be bothered painting the heraldry! It's funny how no one ever expresses an interest in something until it's "being taken away".

As for Tomb Kings - there's plenty of players for them, so they strike me as the oddest of the bunch to be potentially axed. The only reason I can think of would be consolidation. Why do we "need" 2 undead armies? There used to only be one, and I never really got on-board with the split, personally. Similarly, I never understood splitting Warriors of Chaos from Beastmen.

  48. I hope this isn't true, or I just picked the wrong time to start Beastmen, Bretonnian, and woodelf armies (seriously)

  49. "Similarly, I never understood splitting Warriors of Chaos from Beastmen." - Agreed. But Counts and Tomb Kings are two different armies in two very different geographic locations, that would not match together.

  50. I think it was already stated From a GW stuff member about brets and the other not some much fielded armies that they won't disappear they will be mail only.... it was in a reply to someone asking about brets... the guy said something like they would get the dark eldar treatment... that could mean a long time of being mail only... and years before they are going to be updated... just like dark eldar... all those armies listed need extensive over hauls.. to be honest.. both in models that need to be changed to plastic from finecast...and pure concept they are pretty lacking... in army feel... lets look at Tomb Kings most of its models are finecast or simply not there...
brets needs a major overhauls of its entire range... beast men very similar... as well as woodelves... they aren't going to bother making new stuff for them if only a couple of units....is all they are going to make.. look at tomb kings last time...they got what? like 3 box sets... they all need shit loads of work to do... and right now they aren't going to do that... I can't see them discontinuing them all together... I really think they are going to get the Dark Eldar treatment

At this time i can't see them investing in making literally 10 kits pre army... for them to be updated to the new Gamesworkshop standard... thats not including normal and special characters... IT would be sweat All these armies have MAJOR potential in popularity and Models but it would be a monumentus investment on the part of games workshop...

  51. Funnily enough, Bret and WE were the two fantasy armies I was most interested in trying out after failing to get into the game through Orcs and Goblins. So if they're gone, I'm stuck with limited options and feeling like I'll be stuck with armies I don't really care for. I just want traditional fantasy experience if I pick up another wargame.

Sisters is also depressing, I really would have liked them as allies. I loved the idea of fanatical warrior nuns who burn and purge everything.
Plus, sisters cosplayers are awesome, so their loss would be sad.

  52. Found this on Asrai, it's pretty interesting

I am very much hoping it's right rather than Natfka - sorry mate I love me some woodies.

  53. Concerning proof aboutt he closing of GW Germany. It is true. I read the email from Tom Kirby sent out at the beginning of the week. They are consolidating GW Europe, GW Asia and GW North America. All the regional VPs are gone or moved to new positions, except the head of GW Asia, her etains his position but differnet title.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Regional = country. This is in line with what was being done in North America over summer 2013. It is unlikely in response to the semi annual report. Actions like this takes time to do and put into action, a week or month is improbable as a time frame.

  55. think i'd be pretty much done with warhammer if my Beastmen got squatted. Hoping this is just a fake or misinterpreted rumor. I could understand them being moved to online only for the time being since they mostly just sit on shelves taking up space currently, but they're one of the most unique looking armies for fantasy and a really good book could see them being used a lot more.

  56. Just been to club. One of the club members confirmed this as they had been to the studio itself. No more woodies Beastmen or Bret's.

  57. Even if Bretonnian, Wood Elves, Kemri etc are no longer supported your armies won't suddenly vanish. They are still in your model cabinet and you can still play games with them. Plenty of people still use Warhammer Fantasy 3rd Ed. I have a Nippon Army made from Citadel Miniatures that is still workable. If GW figures are not available for a particular army, someone else will make them. Don't fret. There is life outside GW.
