First up though – let’s take a look at the box itself.
Blue and green are so last season. This autumn, it’s all about orange and brown. The new Warhammer Underworlds Core Set is emblazoned with a magnificent beastman – Grashrak to his mates/fellow monstrosities. Filled with bestial vigour after seeing such a brutal visage, we immediately tore into the box with savage abandon.
For those of you looking to get playing right away, there’s a quick start guide that takes you through the basics step by step – perfect for your first battle.

Even if you’ve never touched Warhammer Underworlds, the new Core Set has enough cards to give you everything you need to start playing. In the set, you’ll find two pre-made decks for the warbands inside that you can learn the game with, plus a selection of additional cards for when you want to start deckbuilding.
These include reprints of some Universal staples like Confusion, as well as nifty new options, like Snare, letting you get stuck in with new game mechanics whichever warband you play.
A small but significant change in Warhammer Underworlds: Beastgrave is how faction-specific cards work. Starting with the Core Set, every Warhammer Underworlds warband will have a minimum-sized deck’s worth of cards – that’s 10 Upgrades, 10 Gambits and 12 Objectives. This means that building your first deck is super easy, just grab everything that’s specific to your warband and you’re good to go!
What’s Warhammer Underworlds without tokens? As you’d expect, the Core Set contains pretty much every token you’ll ever need – that is unless, by some miracle, you manage to score more than 46 glory points in a single game.
Lethal hexes are a key part of Warhammer Underworlds: Beastgrave. For one, objective hexes are now double sided, and called feature hexes – certain cards can cause them to flip over, changing them to lethal hexes mid-game! What’s more, both players can choose to place a free lethal hex anywhere they like during setup – we’ll be examining just what this means for the wider game soon.
Dice are throwable cuboids used to randomly determine outcomes. We like them. A lot. The new Core Set comes with a full set of Warhammer Underworlds dice, including five Attack dice, three Defence dice and three magic dice.
In the Warhammer Underworlds: Beastgrave set, you’ll find two double-sided gaming boards, giving you countless potential battlefield set-ups straight out of the box. All four layouts are brand-new, offering new tactical opportunities for every warband, and they are 100% compatible with your existing collection.
Last, but very far from least, we’ve got the models! Both warbands – Grashrak’s Despoilers and Skaeth’s Wild Hunt – are cast in coloured plastic and require no glue to assemble. Just clip them out, click them together and you’re all set.
These models really help bring the world of Beastgrave to life.
