Game Night With Twilight Imperium

Another Game Night down last night, with a full Twilight Imperium completed in just less than 5 hours. That is a record for us, as well as the game being a close tight fight for the finish. I think for the first time we had every player doing what they could to make a push on the victory points. In fact the game almost ended 1 hour earlier than it did.

It was fun, I was able to play the L1Z1X for the first time, and their special racial technology really allows them to control have control over the tech tree.

Here are the races that were involved last night.
The L1Z1X Mindnet: An ancient offshoot of the Lazax, but that have completely given themselves to cybernetic implants and replacements. They have come back to the galaxy to claim their what they see as their birthright.

The Xxcha Kingdom: A very peaceful, docile, and thoughtful people. They loosely resemble turtles, and beleive in a doctrine of peace and negotiation.

The Winnu: Ancient Custodians to of the lost empire of the lazax, the Winnu are intent on returning the true Lazax culture to the galaxy, and they plan on doing so with force.

The Ghosts of Creuss: Theyre ghost stories, only entering our galaxy through special wormholes, some that they can create at will. They are masters of passing through these wormholes and can easily access much of the galaxy. They are beings of energy and light.

The Naalu Collective: A serpentine telepathic race. They are armed with technology and weapons that redirect, manipulate, or damge the neuron impules of the brains of all major known races. The rest of the galaxy will know the tranquility, order, and the true beauty of the Naalu. Submit or be destroyed.

The game was tight, with the Ghosts of Creuss claiming a victory towards the end, even though their fleets and worlds were shrinking as other players were pushing in on the planets they held.

However much of the game was controlled and even dominated by the Xxcha Kingdom, with superior diplomatic skills they were in control the Assembly, and only through a concentrated effort were they deterred from doing whatever they wanted through diplomacy and politics. It was their lack of enough production capabilities that held them were they were, while eventually several of the other races were able to push past.

I was able to take a close second in this game, and able to partake in several large scale battles holding the Ghost of Creuss back from a final victory for a couple rounds. The Ghosts just had progressed too much to be stopped in the end.

This game is a must for those that have not played it.

  2. A game store should be able to get the game for you. The game is made by Fantasy Flight Games, and can also be found on their website.

  3. Me and my mates have been playing TWE quite a bit over the last few months - but things are starting to get a bit stale - any ideas how we may be able to jazz things up a bit more?

    1. Are you playing the expansions? We use all three expansions and almost all of the optional rules for the game.

As far as races go. Its always a random draw. With 5 players and 17 races, that would be 3 to choose from for each person. I also suggest not using pre-set maps.

I have never yet played the same race twice, and with all the expansions, there are more than enough tiles to make for interesting racial combinations. We also for fairness, randomize who sits next to who.

There are other options as well to add excitement into the game. Some of the interesting ones I have seen include all tiles except those next to home systems, and mercatel rex, being placed upside down.
